One of my priorities for Ghana was to visit some of the “slave castles” that dot the coastline. Oversimplifying, these there collection points used by the slave traders to consolidate Africans in bondage before shipping them to the new world. Like the smaller one we visited on Goree Island in Senegal, there was a “door of no return” in each of them. When you let through that door, you were NOT coming back.
I’ll talk more about this on the podcast, but the castles were still an odd juxtaposition of things. The governor had a lavish penthouse suite. The soldiers were below on the same level as the “church”. Then, in the basement dungeons, tons of African’s were tortured (and often died) in misery – literally right below the church in some cases.
We also toured other historical sites of significance in Ghana, including the Kwame Nkrumah Park and the WEB DuBois Center. I felt like all of those belong together in one place. That’s this gallery.
