When we’re in a new (to us) country, we try to do a few stops to get the flavor of it from more than one POV. In Ghana, we started in Elmina & Cape Coast, then went Accra and Koforidua for a few days. After that we flew up to Kumasi for a few more days before wrapping up again in Accra.
Elimina and Cape Coast has some of the slave history that I really wanted to see, and they were bustling with fishing operations running all day. The smell of the fisherman and fish markets was everywhere. Take that however you imagine.
In Accra, we hit some of the historical sites and did a walking tour of the Jamestown neighborhood. The markets and the streets were ALWAYS busy. Kumasi is probably where we should have started. The pace, the scenery and the number of things to see made it a great place for two full days or touring.
Koforidua is the spot that probably has some people scratching their head because it’s not a typical tourist destination. The backstory is that a friend from work has co-founded a company called Ethical Apparel Africa that has been sourcing garments made by a largely female workforce in Ghana. They have effectively partnered with a factory (Maagrace) in the town to produce a lot of garments for companies around the world. We wanted to visit it. They were running light that day because a holiday, but it was still one of the coolest stops we made in Ghana. I snapped a few photos, but learning about the backstory and all the investments they’re making in the workforce was truly humbling. They are a mission-driven business and you can spend a great 15 mins watching the backstory here: https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlbMBlxHxQI
