I wouldn’t say I’m a passionate scholar of Greek history, but podcasts like Hardcore History help me appreciate what the Greco-Roman era leaders were able to accomplish. The opportunity to visit some of the sites around Greece was something I was really looking forward to. Unlike other place, but very much like some of the Roman ruins we’ve seen, you need to have an active imagination when touring many of the spots in Greece. They’ve been damaged, stolen, removed, or just eroded to the point where it’s hard to tell what you’re seeing.
More than once, there’d be a block in an open field and then a huge description of what was there with a photo of a whole building that highlighted the block you’re seeing. There were certainly some spectacular ruins still there, but many were not. It’s all good.
On a related note, some of the museums were truly great. At some point, you get “full” of the statues and pottery, but it was still a great day. The Acropolis museum is certainly one of the cooler places we’ve seen. The Acropolis was cool too! 🙂
Here are photos from the “7 sites” and 2-3 museums we visited in Greece
